To make this hot cocoa recipe, you’ll need to first mix together the ingredients listed in the recipe card. Then add vanilla extract and alcohol—in our case butterscotch schnapps and rumchata—and stir gently with a cinnamon stick or candy cane for garnish.

Can I Make This Spiked White Hot Chocolate Alcohol-Free?

Yes, you can make this white hot chocolate drink without alcohol! To replicate the flavors of booze in this amazingly cozy drink, here are a couple great substitutes:
Butterscotch Schnapps Substitute: Butter Beer – muggles know it as butterscotch soda. This might make your drink a little fizzy, so if you want to avoid that try butterscotch syrup!
Spiced Rum Substitute: Use rum flavored syrup instead of the real stuff.

I personally love Starbucks white hot chocolate mix—the salted caramel and dark chocolate are also really good.
Try it with flavored whipped cream: I’ve seen all the new favored whipped creams coming out, and they all sound so good! Caramel is my favorite—and I tried it on this recipe and it was PERFECTION!
You could use any store-bought whipped cream, or you could make your own by adding flavoring to unsweetened whipping cream.
Add a hot chocolate topper: While some people love whipped cream, others do not. But that doesn’t mean they should be left out when it comes at adding fun toppings on spiked holiday drinks.

Butterscotch Schnapps Spiked Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder or regular hot cocoa powder or white hot chocolate powder. remove sugar ingredient if using a hot cocoa mix with added sugar, unless you like it sweet!
- 1 tablespoons Sugar if using unsweetened powder
- 1 dash Salt
- 1/2 cup Milk or soy milk if you like it extra creamy use 1/4 milk and 1/4 heavy cream
- 1/8 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 1.5 oz Spiced Rum or Rumchata
- 1.5 oz Butterscotch Schnapps
- 1 dash Orange bitters optional
- 1 tablespoon Whipped Cream optional
Instructions
- Mix cocoa, sugar and salt in a large mug.
- Heat milk on stovetop until hot, or in microwave on high for 1.5 minutes or until hot.
- Gradually add hot milk to cocoa mixture in mug, stirring until well blended.
- Add vanilla extract, rum and schnapps to hot chocolate.
- Optional: Add a dash of orange bitters, stir and top with whipped cream, shaved chocolate, and garnish with a cinnamon stick or candy cane
